Council Policy – Temporary Accommodation
At the 22 September 2026 Meeting, Council resolved to advertise the new (draft) Temporary Accommodation Policy.
The objective of the amended policy is to provide guidance and support to applicants seeking approval for temporary accommodation on private property whilst preparing for and the constructing of a dwelling for permanent accommodation.
The previous policy was developed when temporary accommodation proposals were largely limited to accommodation associated with the construction of a dwelling. Changes to the Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Regulations 1997, together with the increased use of caravans, RVs and tiny homes, have broadened the range of temporary accommodation circumstances requiring assessment.
Temporary accommodation applications can vary significantly depending on site characteristics, servicing arrangements and the form of accommodation proposed. Proposed amendments to the current policy will provide clear assessment criteria while allowing applications to be considered on their individual merits and ensuring appropriate public health, safety and amenity outcomes are appropriately addressed.

How to make a submission
Comments on the proposal are now invited and can be emailed to admin@katanning.wa.gov.au or posted to the Shire’s Chief Executive Officer at PO Box 130 KATANNING WA 6317 by no later than Wednesday 20th October 2026.
All submissions must include the following information:
Your name, address and contact telephone number
- How your interests are affected; whether as a private citizen, on behalf of a company or other organisation, or as an owner or occupier of property
- Address of property affected (if applicable)
- Whether your submission is in support of or objecting to the proposal and provide any arguments supporting your comments.
All submissions received may be made public at a Council meeting and included in a Council Agenda, which will be available on the Shire’s website, unless a submission specifically requests otherwise.
