The Shire of Katanning invites public comment on the draft ‘Wind Farms’ Local Planning Policy (link to policy below).
DRAFT ‘WIND FARMS’ LOCAL PLANNING POLICY
This policy has been drafted to provide direction and guidance on the development of wind farms within the Shire. It provides information regarding Development Application requirements, community and stakeholder engagement, and the assessment of proposals for wind farms.
The objectives of the draft policy include:
1. To protect continued traditional agricultural, other food production activities, and tourism uses.
2. To reduce the amenity impact of wind farms by ensuring a satisfactory minimum distance from sensitive land uses.
3. To minimise or avoid any potential impact on the natural environment, flora and fauna.
4. To achieve wind farm layouts which do not compromise the safety of the local community, aviation activities, or continuation of activities occurring on nearby and adjacent land.
5. To ensure that the local community is engaged in the early stages of wind farm planning, by the proponent.
6. To protect areas of visual significance and ensure wind turbines are appropriately and sensitively sited.
7. To protect and maintain Council’s Road Infrastructure.
Comments on the proposed policy are now invited and can be emailed to admin@katanning.wa.gov.au or posted to the Shire’s Chief Executive Officer at PO Box 130 KATANNING WA 6317 by no later than Friday 1 August 2025.
All submissions must include the following information:
· Your name, address and contact telephone number;
· How your interests are affected; whether as a private citizen, on behalf of a company or other organisation, or as an owner or occupier of property;
· Address of property affected (if applicable); and
· Whether your submission is in support of, or objecting to the proposal and provide any arguments supporting your comments.
All submissions received may be made public at a Council meeting and included in a Council Agenda, which will be available on the Shire’s website, unless a submission specifically requests otherwise.
