Using Roads

The Shire is committed to ensuring that our roads are safe for everyone — whether you're driving, cycling, walking, or riding. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we encourage all road users to do their part. Simple actions such as observing speed limits, giving way where required, avoiding distractions, and being mindful of other road users can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Whether you're travelling a short distance or making a longer journey, taking the time to drive safely and responsibly helps protect lives.

The Road Safety Commission’s Guide to Driving on WA Country Roads provides more road safety and road rules information.

Oversized Vehicles

Katanning is a large rural and farming community, and road users should be aware of increased heavy freight traffic and towed farm equipment on local roads during peak farming periods.

Many of these will be oversized vehicles that may need part or even all of the oncoming lane to manoeuvre safely. It's essential to give them plenty of space when passing. Due to their size and weight, these vehicles require significantly more distance to stop than a standard car. Avoid pulling in front of them suddenly, as the driver may not be able to stop in time.

Farmers are encouraged to check the updated Guide to the Movement of Towed Agricultural Implements in Western Australia or ring the Department of Transport on 13 11 56 for guidance on their responsibilities.
