President's Update

Congratulations to our nine new community members who received their citizenship at our Australia Day Breakfast. They were from Philippines, Myanmar, Thailand and Pakistan. Our Citizen of the Year, Moolay, is a member of the Karen Community and our breakfast showcased the wonderful contribution made by many community members which also highlights the rich multicultural town we live in.

Your Council will begin the year with a full day workshop with community stakeholders. In addition to our normal Council business and financial updates we have presentations from SWAMS, Ausgold, WANSLEA, ALTA 1 and the WA Police.

Your Council is committed to advocating on behalf of our community and neighbours to achieve high levels of service in health, law and order, education, community and economic development. Later in the month we will also meet with the Principal of Katanning Senior High School and the CEO of WAMMCO.

2023 is shaping up to be another interesting year!

Best wishes to you all.
Shire President, Liz Guidera

Australia Day in Katanning

The Katanning community were treated to a free barbeque breakfast for Australia Day at the Katanning Lions Park on Thursday 26 January 2023.

Volunteers from the Lions Club of Katanning, Apex Club of Katanning, Rotary Club of Katanning and Islamic Association of Katanning served up a yummy breakfast to the community followed by a Citizenship Ceremony which welcomed nine new Australian Citizens for Katanning, and the Citizen of the Year Awards presented by Shire President, Liz Guidera.

Each year on Australia Day, the Community Citizen of the Year Awards give local governments around the state the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution and celebrate the active citizenship of Western Australians at a local community level in several categories.

These awards are proudly sponsored by the Department of Communities; supported by Channel 9, 6PR and WA Today; and delivered in partnership with Auspire – Australia Day Council WA.

The award winners of Katanning's Community Citizen of the Year for 2023 were:
  • Community Citizen of the Year Award – Moolay Ta Loh
  • Senior Citizen of the Year Award – Dorothy and Vince Cacciola
  • Active Citizenship Award – Katanning & Districts Pool Association
  • Active Citizenship Award – Katanning Environmental Container Cash In
The guest speaker for the morning was Australia Day Ambassador, Holly-Ann Martin, managing Director of Safe4Kids and past resident of Katanning. The Shire of Katanning extends a thank you to the Katanning Scouts and Girl Guides for participating in the ceremony and Ron Wake for donating sound and music services.

How Do I Keep Informed in a Bushfire or Emergency

Department of Fire and Emergency Services: Keep Informed During a Bushfire or Emergency

Fires can happen suddenly and change quickly, so don’t rely on receiving a warning. It’s your responsibility to stay informed and alert. Be flexible - get emergency information from multiple sources and never rely on any one source of information. Take these four steps to help keep you informed about bushfires and emergencies near you:

Stay connected:
Connected communities are safer communities.
Keep in contact with neighbours, friends and family, especially during a high-risk fire day. Talk to your local brigade in advance about how to prepare for a bushfire.

Stay alert:
If you can see or smell a bushfire - that’s your warning.
Your surroundings could be the best source of information. If you live in, or near bush, you need to stay alert. If there are signs of a bushfire you could be in danger. Act immediately to keep you and your family safe.

Keep your details up to date
A telephone warning might be sent to your mobile phone or landline in extreme circumstances. This warning system (Emergency Alert) uses the address held by your phone company. Keep your address details up to date with your phone company to give yourself the best chance of receiving a warning if one is issued.

Monitor official warnings
During an emergency, monitor what’s happening. You can fine bushfire alerts and warning at: For more information visit dfes.wa.gov.au/bushfire or or contact DFES Community Preparedness at Community.Preparedness@dfes.wa.gov.au or 9395 9816.
