Burning Permits

The Manager of Work's Secretary is gazetted to issue Permits to Burn under the Bush Fire Act to Katanning town residents only. They are issued free of charge upon request. A number of conditions must be on the permit and must be complied with.

Restricted Burning is effective from 15th February to 30 April and 1st October to 31st October. These dates are inclusive and only apply to the Shire of Katanning. Prohibited Burning is effective from 1st November to 14th February.

During Restricted Burning, a person shall not light a fire unless the following conditions are complied with:

  • Obtain a Permit
  • Notify neighbours, Fire & Rescue Service, Rural residents contact Fire Control Officer for their area.
  • At least 3 persons in attendance
  • Firebreak/Cleared area around the fire.
  • Fire may not be lit on days of extreme or very high fire danger.

1m x 1m piles of garden refuse can be burnt between 6pm and 11pm without a permit. During Probited Burning, no fires at all to be lit during the day. Between 6pm and 11pm 1m x 1m piles of garden refuse can be burnt if a permit has been obtained. Normal conditions apply as above.

Penalties

Fines apply for infringements of burning restrictions.
